Summer Placement Pilot

Godstuff summer Placement Pilot 2017 DRAFT

The Godstuff summer placement is an opportunity to spend most of a summer vacation experiencing church and youthwork. The time will include training, teaching and debrief with experienced trainers in a residential setting.

Teaching will be led by Revd Bob Clucas, Revd Steve Tilley and others. Training will include FRUIT? and a First Aid course.

Our aim is to give people a cost neutral summer placement and an experience that will genuinely enhance your CV.

The Godstuff trustees have allocated funds to provide pocket money and expenses for a small group of volunteers who will be volunteers on Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture and Swanbourne Falcon Holiday. There will be a week of training and funded preparation time. We will seek to find some extra volunteer experience in the middle of the placement which we are calling the flexible window – although we know that windows are not flexible.

Draft Schedule

Fixed and Flexible

There are three fixed points that all volunteers are expected to do. These are the initial training week, Fylingthorpe and Swanbourne. The flexible window is about two and a half weeks. How it is used will be arranged on an individual basis. Some of the options include using the CPAS offer to help system to volunteer on another venture or Falcon; there are about 30 that fit our window. Other options include helping on a church children's work week, or shadowing a Minister and helping him or her in their work. Hopefully there will be time for each participant in the placement to take some days off to spend with family or friends during this time.

The first two Sundays may be spent visiting a placement church or organisation for the flexible window later in the placement.

Each week will have at least one day off, except when running a holiday (days in lieu will be taken later).

Week one – 9th July 2017

Residential Training Conference

Monday to Saturday – an opportunity for some teaching and training. Some of the training will be theoretical and some very practical.  We aim to develop understanding the Christian gospel and how to communicate it in word and action.

Week two – Sunday 16th of July

Preparation and equipment week

Time to sort equipment and prepare crafts, talks, dormitory groups or anything else you've been asked to do for the venture or Falcon. Folk will probably be based in Warwickshire for most of this week. On Saturday 22nd July Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture begins so we travel to North Yorkshire for lunchtime.

Week three – Sunday 24th of July

Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture

Sunday is team preparation day at Fylingthorpe. Hopefully the major setup as been achieved on Saturday afternoon and final setup is on Monday morning

The members arrive at teatime on Monday at Fylingthorpe. For those new to the Fylingthorpe team this will probably be a laid-back but exhausting introduction to a fantastic way to do evangelism and nurture with young people. Fylingthorpe CYFA venture aims to give a great holiday to young people from a wide social background which allows them to think through life and examine the claims of the Christian truth without any pressure.

Week four – Sunday 30th of July

End of Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture and beginning of flexible window

The flexible window is about two and a half weeks. How it is used will be arranged on an individual basis. Some of the options include using the CPAS offer to help scheme to volunteer on another venture, helping on the church children's work week, or shadowing a Minister and helping him or her in their work. Hopefully there will be time for each participant in the placement to take some days off to spend with family or friends during this time.

Week five – Sunday 6th of August

Middle of the flexible window.

Week six – Sunday 13th of August

End of flexible window and beginning Of Swanbourne Falcon.

Week seven – Sunday 20th of August

Swanbourne Falcon

For those new to Falcon holidays the aim is to give the young people a great holiday, to share Jesus’ love in word and action. Also, we want to build up the young people and the team. It is very tiring but good fun. Members arrive at teatime on Sunday.

Week eight – Sunday 27th of August

Bank Holiday Weekend and short debrief

The final part of the placement (Probably Tuesday to Thursday) will be designed to give you space to reflect and recover.

Criteria and Procedures

All participants are expected to be practising Christians. Most will be undergraduates or postgraduates. You need to be willing to live out of a suitcase with only occasional visits home for eight weeks. You will be fed and we will try to arrange a place to sleep which will usually include a bed. A willingness to learn and to work hard some of the time is essential.

We aim to keep administration to a minimum, but there will be administrative hoops you need to pass through. This will include at least one criminal record check and the normal applications procedures for the holidays.

If you are already a member of Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture team will not need a preliminary interview – just give Bob Clucas a call and have a chat. If you are already a member of the Swanbourne Falcon Team you need to have a conversation with Bob.

If you are interested In the Godstuff Summer Placement and are not a member of neither Fylingthorpe or Swanbourne teams then contact Bob and he will contact you with some preliminary questions and arrange an interview if that is appropriate.

You must apply for this Fylingthorpe CYFA Venture through Cathy Shearn and follow the procedures for CPAS vetting in the normal way.

You must apply for Swanbourne Falcon to Julie Batchelor and follow the procedures the CPAS vetting in the normal way.

You will need to comply with whatever vetting the organisation requires for the flexible window.

Godstuff (mainly Bob) will meet with you or otherwise communicate and work out how the flexible window will work for you. You may need to prove to another organisation that you are a safe and appropriate person to work in that place.
